WALKING WITH THINKING
About the project
Anti-Corruption Walks Kyiv is a project of the Anti-Corruption Research and Education Centre (ACREC), which is an innovative educational tool in the form of interactive city guided tours. The Anti-Corruption Project was created to inform civil society about mechanisms of corruption with a focus on specific ways and tools to prevent them in the future, as well as the activities and successes of state bodies, non-governmental organizations and anti-corruption activists in Ukraine. The key objective of the project is to increase the level of political education and to create a zero tolerance of citizens for corruption. In our work, we aim to inspire tour participants with positive success stories that will contribute to a gradual change in the discourse of corruption in Ukraine. Equally important is encouraging citizens to engage in civic activism and volunteer work in the field of preventing corruption in our country. We do this through anticorruption tours of the cities, which last from 1 to 2 hours on the favorite routes of residents and visitors of the capital. Each route includes from 4 to 7 stations linked to various locations related to the demonstration cases of corruption and anti-corruption. In addition to the informative component, tours, role-playing games, contests and prizes are a must-see.
Our goals
Informing citizens and guests of Ukraine on the topic of corruption (sites of corruption) and anti-corruption (sites of hope);
Learning to use modern practices, mechanisms and tools for preventing and combating corruption;
Generate motivation to fight corruption individually and encourage positive changes in public discourse regarding corruption in Ukraine.
History of the project
The history of Anti-Corruption Walks Kyiv began in 2017, when ACREC first initiated a meeting of 12 journalists, lawyers and academics from Ukraine and Germany to develop a concept for an anti-corruption tour project. The idea behind the project was based on the experience of the German NGO Lobby Control, which has been successfully conducting similar tours in Berlin for over 10 years. In the course of several meetings, the content of the first Kyiv Walk was developed, a pilot version of which was presented to Ukrainian and foreign audiences in Kyiv. Following the public presentation of the project at the office of the Reanimation Package of Reforms in autumn 2017, anti-corruption tours have officially started in Kyiv. Since then, ACREC guides and volunteers have conducted more than 20 tours in Ukrainian and English. Since its launch, the tour project has received a great deal of positive feedback from Ukrainian and international participants, and has been described in Ukrainian and foreign media. Currently, Anti-Corruption Walks form a part of ACREC's educational activities. The development and presentation of new anticorruption stations was also included in curriculum of the ACREC
Anti-Corruption Interdisciplinary Studies: Certification Program, which further enriches the content of anticorruption excursions. In 2019, ACREC continues the active development of the Kyiv Anti-Corruption Tours project with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation and the Embassy of Sweden in Ukraine.
